Buyer queries are shifting.

Buyer queries are shifting. During the 2025 holiday season, traffic to retail and B2B websites from generative AI tools jumped 693.4% year over year according to the Adobe 2025 holiday shopping report. Your keyword rankings don't show whether your brand appears in the generated answers. At DWAO, we work with enterprise brands across India and globally who need the best tools for AI search optimization and share of voice to track AI visibility.
Search has split into two channels. Ten years ago, SEO tracked keyword rankings, impressions, and clicks on Google. That's still half the story today. When a buyer searches for solutions, gifts, or how-to guides, they get AI answers with source citations instead of traditional search results. If your brand isn't cited in that answer, the buyer won't visit your site, even with a top ranking.
AI tools are now a major traffic source for many brands. This means AI visibility is critical, not optional. Most existing guidance assumes North American adoption patterns. We address the India and APAC gap directly.
AI share of voice uses a simple formula:
AI SOV (%) = (Brand mentions in AI responses / Total AI responses for your prompt set) × 100
AI SOV differs from traditional SEO SOV:
A brand might rank first on Google but be completely absent from the AI answer. Both channels need attention.
Before investing in best tools for AI search optimization and share of voice, evaluate these five critical criteria:
Platform coverage. Which AI systems does the tool check each run? ChatGPT and Gemini dominate, but Perplexity and Claude cite differently. Tools checking only two platforms will miss visibility gaps. Enterprise teams should pick trackers covering at least four AI systems.
Prompt flexibility. Can you customize queries to match real buyer language? Or are you stuck with preset keyword lists? Prompts from actual customer research produce helpful data. Prompts mapped from keywords often produce incorrect scores. This is the biggest lever most teams miss.
Update frequency. Monthly updates are standard and recommended. Quarterly is too slow to measure impact. Daily updates are unnecessary overhead.
Citation depth. Entry-level tools show mentions. Mid-tier tools show where mentions came from. Enterprise tools show which third-party domains the AI cited when you didn't appear. That layer tells you exactly what content gap to fill.
Usefulness. A dashboard showing "17% SOV" is less useful than one showing "Rivals appeared in 4 prompts where you didn't. Their most-cited source is domain X publishing topic Y."
HubSpot AEO Grader gives you a baseline AI visibility score and identifies top prompts where you're missing. Free. No credit card needed. Good for proving the concept before committing budget.
Otterly.AI starts at $29 per month and offers basic monitoring across ChatGPT and Gemini. Best for focused brand awareness prompts only. Platform coverage is limited to just two AI systems.
Peec AI costs around $99 per month and includes custom prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Good if you need custom prompts and broad platform coverage without complex enterprise features.
Scrunch AI runs around $79 per month and focuses on tracking your rivals. It tracks your SOV against named competitors across multiple prompts. Useful for monthly benchmarking without building a full tracking program.
Profound tracks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews with source tracking and citation details. Best for enterprise teams needing a dashboard connecting AI SOV to owned content. Works with data warehouses for integration. Custom pricing.
Semrush AI Toolkit extends your existing keyword tracking into AI visibility. Useful if you want one unified platform for traditional rankings and AI SOV together. Platform coverage is narrower than dedicated tools.
Ahrefs expanded Brand Radar to include AI mention tracking across platforms. Best for agencies needing both traditional rankings and AI SOV in one platform. Custom pricing available.
Measurement without action wastes budget and time. After your first month tracking, follow this workflow:
This bridge between data and action separates unused tools from tools that drive revenue.
Most enterprise teams ask: "Where does AI SOV live in our Adobe Analytics or GA4 dashboards?" The honest answer is that it doesn't yet. Most tools lack native connections to analytics platforms.
If your tool offers API access, build a connector to pull monthly data into your data warehouse and BI tool. This way, AI SOV lives alongside organic traffic and paid spend in one place.
If your tool lacks API access, export reports manually and build a tracking sheet in your BI layer. It's manual, but better than switching dashboards constantly.
For India teams: AI training data refreshes follow US timelines. Fresh Indian content takes longer to show in answers compared to US content. Factor this into your update cycles.
Brand monitoring tracks whether your name appears anywhere in AI responses. AI SOV tracks your mention rate versus rivals across specific prompts. A brand can have high monitoring scores but low SOV if rivals appear much more often. Start with SOV for actionable data. Add monitoring only to catch reputation issues.
Monthly is standard and recommended for most programs. Weekly wastes budget without adding value. Quarterly is too slow to iterate. Monthly gives you useful signal while staying cost-efficient.
ChatGPT and Gemini dominate for most use cases today. If your buyers use Perplexity heavily (common in tech and finance), track that too. Start with two systems and add others as your program grows.
A good prompt set reflects real buyer language and purchase-stage questions, not just keywords. Ask your sales team, customer success team, and community forums what questions come up. If your prompts don't match that language, the data won't connect to business results.
Not necessarily for most programs. One person spending 4 to 5 hours monthly can manage a 50 to 100 prompt program. At 200+ prompts, consider a half-time role. Most teams fold this into existing SEO or content leadership responsibilities.
No, absolutely not. SEO and AI SOV are complementary, not competing. Traditional rankings still drive most organic traffic. AI SOV is the emerging channel. Treating it as a replacement is a common mistake.
Expect 4 to 6 weeks to see meaningful movement in AI SOV metrics. AI systems don't re-index as often as Google does. Citation patterns lag content freshness by several days. Plan for quarterly reviews.
Yes, definitely. AI training data, recency weighting, and citation patterns differ by region. An article on an Indian news site may rank lower in global responses but higher in India-specific queries. Track by region if you operate across multiple markets.
