ChatGPT Ads appear below AI answers to Free and Go plan users. They match to chat topics rather than keywords. They run in eight countries as of September 2026, with India launch expected soon. For large brands, these ads fill a gap between Google's bottom-funnel work and Meta's brand building.
ChatGPT Ads launched February 9, 2026. Since then they've expanded to the US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, and Brazil. India launch is not confirmed as of September 2026, but the rollout pattern suggests Indian large brands should start getting ready now.
For companies in SaaS, fintech, edtech, travel, and direct-to-consumer categories, this is a new option. Unlike Google Ads, which catch keyword searches, ChatGPT Ads show up in active research chats. A user asking ChatGPT "What is the best CRM for a startup?" has already shown intent. That spot fills a gap in most media plans.
Ads show only to logged-in Free and Go plan users. This leaves out Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers, which see no ads. Users under 18 are also left out. Ads don't run in chats about sensitive topics like politics or health.
Ads sit below the AI answer in a marked Sponsored box. The format never breaks up the answer. Your ad shows as a clean card: brand name, favicon, headline, description, and image. For brands used to Google's sidebar or Meta's feed, this native spot needs creative that works alone without heavy visual impact.
In reality, your audience is smaller than Google or Meta. Your reach is limited to eight nations. If your core buyers are on paid tiers or your audience is mostly under 18, this channel may not fit your plan yet.
The biggest change from Google and Meta is how targeting works. There are no keywords, no audience groups, and no lookalike models. Instead, you describe context clues: chat moments where your product fits.
You might write context clues like:
OpenAI's system then matches your ad when a chat is similar to those clues. The system learns from your clues and gets better over time. This works like how Google's Smart Bidding learns from sales.
The plus side is relevance without keyword padding. The tradeoff is less control and less sight into results. You don't see which questions set off your ad or which topics fell flat. You get overall CPC and CPM info plus sales tracking through the OpenAI Pixel. That's fewer details than Google gives, especially in the current beta phase.
Each ad has five must-have parts:
That's it. No banners, pop-ups, or surprise ads. Your ad fights for focus in a clean style that fits ChatGPT's look.
Creative results differ from Google and Meta. Generic brand messages don't do well. Copy that speaks to the user's issue works better. A SaaS company asking "Comparing project tools?" beats one saying "Leading project tool."
Image quality counts, but fancy work isn't needed. Product shots and benefit-focused images work well. The key is straight talk and what the user is looking for.
Setup takes three parts: account access, sales tracking, and creative assets.
Account access starts at ads.openai.com. Per OpenAI's May 2026 launch news, self-serve access opened to all US brands with no stated lowest spend. Outside the US, you can access through tech partners like StackAdapt or holding firms including Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP.
Sales tracking uses the OpenAI Pixel. Put a single code on your website and set up what counts. This might be:
Without right pixel setup, you can't track results or adjust for sales. This must happen before launch.
Creative assets are simple:
Unlike Google Ads, where you might test 20 or more versions, the creative tools are limited in beta. A tight set works fine. If you run Google and Meta ads, your tracking setup moves over. The new part is context clues and chat-based targeting.
Google Ads catch keyword searches. You pick which keywords trigger your ad and block bad searches. These ads match chat topics using context clues. You don't see what questions set them off or control each placement. Google gives more say, but this platform gives higher intent since users are already digging, not just typing keywords.
India launch is not confirmed as of September 2026, but the rollout pattern suggests it's coming soon. Start getting ready now: put the OpenAI Pixel on your website, build context clues, and set up your sales funnel. When the platform opens in India, you'll be set to go right away.
Ads use two bidding types: cost-per-thousand-views (CPM) and cost-per-click (CPC, added in April 2026). Self-serve ads have no stated lowest spend. Early managed ads from large brands needed six-figure budgets. Costs shift with how many brands want the same chat topics, like Google's bidding model.
The OpenAI Pixel turns on sales tracking. Your board shows CPC, CPM, views, clicks, and sales. You don't get chat-level data or search-term lists like Google gives. Focus on total metrics: cost per sign-up, cost per demo, or return on ad spend.
Free and Go plan users only. Paid tiers see no ads. Users under 18 are left out. Sensitive-topic chats don't show ads. Your audience is smaller than Google or Meta, but users who see your ads have picked ChatGPT and are actively looking.
Partially. Google Ads copy is often keyword-based. Your ads need benefit-focused, chat-style copy that works without keywords. Your images can often move over, but rewrite your headlines and descriptions for the chat format.
Rules are still forming. The EU is making AI ad rules as part of its AI Act. India and the US don't yet have set AI ad rules, though rules about being clear and keeping things private are coming. Per OpenAI's advertising approach, they don't share personal data with ad firms, the AI stays unbiased, and ads are marked as such. Risk is low for ads that are set up right, but watch for new rules as the field grows.
The goal isn't to drop Google or Meta but to add to your ad plan with a channel where big companies do research. Early brands are building plans that will grow as the platform spreads. For teams at mid-to-large firms in India and Asia, starting to get ready now puts you in place to move fast when the market opens.
Your tracking setup on Google and Meta moves over. The new part is context clues and how chat intent differs from keyword and group targeting. The learning curve is doable, especially for teams with ad experience across more than one system.
